.

.

professional ecologists have been saying for the last decade.
meaningful dialogue on growth since its professionalism makes

.6.

I'

method what environmentalists and
report can be a springboard for a
legitimate.

The report ;s incomplete and inadequate in some respects (as its authors admit), and those who wish to avoid
dealing with its blunt reality will undoubtedly dwell on this fact. Club of Rome members, themselves. were not
unanimous in accepting all its conclusions. However. the Executive Committee of the Club has agreed on the fol-
lowing points among others;'

1. We are convinced that realization of the qu.antitative T'estraints of the wOl'ld enViT'Olunent and of
the tragic consequ.ences of an overshoot is essential to the initiation of new forms of thinking
that will lead to a fundconental T'evision of human behavior. . .

Hopefully, the
the subject

2. We Q1:'e fUI'ther convinced that demographic pl'eSSUl'e in the wOl'ld has alT'eady attained such a high
level and is mOl'eove:r so unequally distPibuted, that this alone must compel mankind to seek a state
of equilibrium on ou:r planet. . .

3. We recognize that world equilibriwn can become a f"eality only if the lot of the so-called developi~lg
countPies is substantially improved, both in absolute terms and l'elative to the economically
developed nations, and we affirm that this improvement can be achieved ollly thf"ough a global
stmtegy. . .

6. We are unanimously convinced that rapid, f"adical redressment of the present unbalanced and
dangerously deterio:rating wOl,ld situation is the pnmary task facing humcmity. . .

10. We affirm fi~lally that any delibel'ate attempt to l'each a :rational and mu1uT"'~ng state of equilib1'ium
by planned measures, rather than by chance 01' catastl'ophe. ,r:rust ultimately be founded on a basic
change of values wu1 goals at individual, national and world levels.

A frequently raised criticism of limits to Growth is that it raises a grim spectre but offers no concrete
suggestions for meeting the impending crisis. It is the conviction of the Rm1COE staff that the primary
value of this report is to force people throughout the world to begin facing ecological realities. Only
children believe that they live in a world where there are no constraints to their behavior limits
to Growth confronts man on the planet earth with the single imperative of maturity. ------

All graphs and quoted material are reprinted from
The Limits to Growth, A Report for The Club of Rome's
Project on the Predicament of Mankind, by Donella H.
Meadows, Dennis L.
