Therefore. a prudent

approach would be based on substantial research and test work. Such work

would provide the hard data required to engineer the successful system.

The area of most immediate concern is capsule design and construction.

A test program designed to identify the best plastic and capsule

manufacturing process would be a logical first step.

.~~

Handling of the capsules at either end of the pipeline might be done by

conventional means. Therefore. a capsule capable of surviving a modest

..~.
. .
.... -

.9
l'

amount of rolling, lifting. stacking. and so forth would be desirable.

Capsules could be fabricated by hand and subjected to a series of tests to

determine their resistance to such abuse.

A second series of tests could be conducted by subjecting the capsules

to pressures up to 5,000 pounds per square inch. These tests would be

conducted to determine the resistance of the capsule to perforation by the

sharp edges of the coal particles.

Another series of tests would deal with the resistance to abrasion of

the capsule material. The capsules could be placed in a water-filled tank

and rubbed with a large diameter wheel of the same or similar material. The

number of hours required to create holes in the bag would be recorded as

would the test conditions.

A second area requiring substantial effort will be the pump stations.

Perhaps the best method to approach this problem would be the construction of

a full scale test loop. The full size test facility is recommended because

the research work to date has been performed in pipes of relatively small

size. Capsules of the selected material could then be passed through the

,
