This is the first time the <br />Bureau of Reclamation has been <br />in\oOlved in such a program in the <br />Arkansas Valley, and when completed, <br />will treat historic mine wastewaters <br />which ha\'e caused senous pollution <br />to maior sections in the headwaters of <br />the famous Arkansas River. <br /> <br />CORPS OF ENGINEERS <br /> <br />John Martin R~ervoir 0 & M <br />$2.021 million <br /> <br />Trinidad Like 0 & M <br />$701,000 <br /> <br />\Vith the completion of the fountain <br />Creek Flood Control Project in Pueblo <br />in 1989. representatives from the <br />Albuquerque and Pueblo oifices of the <br />Corps were kept busy operaung and <br />maintaining John Martin and Trinidad <br />Dams and Reservoirs during an un- <br />usually dl)' ~eason. It is a~lulely <br />essential that annual operation and <br />maintenance projects be carried on to <br />assure the tull capabilities of these <br />essential prOjectS fat t100d control and <br />water management programs_ Corps of <br />Engineer officials also provided out- <br />standmg service for area Cities, to.....ns, <br /> <br />6 <br /> <br />irrigation companies, and individuals <br />in evaluating requests for 404 Permib <br />and re,>earch on flood comral <br />problems. <br /> <br />During testimony presented before the <br />Appropriation Subcommittees of <br />Congress on March 27, the Colorado <br />Delegation joined with other members <br />of the Arkansas River Basin Interstate <br />Committee from Arkansas, MIssouri, <br />Oklahoma and Kansas, to support <br />Congressional Authorization tor <br />construction of the Montgomery Poim <br />Lock and Dam PrOJect, which will be <br />located al the COnfluence of the <br />Arkansas-While and MiSSISSIppi Rivers. <br />This Project is ab'>Olulely e...sentlal for <br />continued growth of navigation on the <br />Arkansas River, .md is required as the <br />result of the change ot llows along the <br />mainstream of the MissiSSippi River. <br /> <br />The Colorado members of the <br />Arkansas River Basin Inlerstate <br />Committee e"'pressed their sincere and <br />profound gratllude to the Members of <br />Congress for their continued support <br />of watet resource programs.
