IN THE MISSOURI RIVER BASIN

Basinwide Status

By the close of 1959 flooo. control and river development projects of
the Corps of Engineers having an estimated total Federal cost of $765,000,000
had been constructed or essentially completed in the l~ssouri River Basin.
Presently under construction, or scheduled for construction start shortly,
are projects estimated to cost $1,330,000,000. In the planning stage are
additional projects having an estimated construction cost of $246,000,000.

During 1959, construction w~rk on river control projects estimated at
$92)000,000 was placed under contract by the Corps in the Basin. (Tnis
fi~re includes ~~rk expected to be placed under contract prior to 1 Janua~J
1911!lll) The outlook for 1960 is f'or approximately $140,000,000 of additional
work to be awarded for construction.

Appropriations for thc civil works program of the Corps in the Missouri
Basin for fiscal year 1960, which ends 1 July 1960, araount to $112,868,000.

Missouri River Dams

Tne construction of major multiple-purpose dams and reservoirs on the
main stem of the !Jl.issouri River moved into the final stage in 1959, with
the initiation of' construction on Big Bend Dam above Chamberlain, South
Dakota. Essentially completed and operating in the pUbli,c service are the
Fort Peck Dam in Montana, Garrison Dam in North Dakota, Fort Randall Dam in
South Dakota, and Gavins Point Dam on the South Dakota-Nebraska border.
Major construction activitJ' continues at Oshe Dam near Pierre, South Dakota,
where the last load of earth was placed on the main embankment this fall.
Remaining work in the damsi te area '1ill be concentrated largely on the pO~Ter
structures and the spillway.

Construction is conUnuing on the fourth and fifth pO'Ter generation
units at the Garrison project, and on the second powerplant at Fort Peck.
The present installed capacity of the four operating main stem power plants
is 745,000 kilo~Tatts. These plants produced approximately 3,900,000,000
kilo'Tatt hours of electricity in 1959, an inCrease of 8 percent over 1958.
With the addition of the two final generator units at Garrison by mid-1960,
the installed capacity of the main stem plants will be increased to 905,000
kilowatts.
