Regulated water releases from the system provided
a 7-month navigation season on the lowel.' Missouri River with a new record
commercial traffic lllDvement of 829,000 tons, Stored wf'ter and regulated
releases also assured a high degree of protection from any floods that might
have originated on the Missouri above Sioux City; and provided ample water
sU1Jply for cities, towns and industries which take their water from the
river,

~~{:if~
.,-:,-:,..)-~,

Agricultclral Levee program

};--/:,--:.
'-':"?\:-":
;{ '~;".-:::
,.::~'- .~:;-
,.0.'.".<.
:':}:.~:,:~~
~Il~

:,i:'::::,jr::'
~:,~):~;-
~t~~{
~t;~i~:.

t~~
~~..
~t
r::~,),
.+i'.;.::'~
?,:-w.';
;~t.;~;~..
wi
I

.:r::c;.
~!1
~l~~
I

fi'M
~s
~i~~
,',"
~-',:-.
.-"-,'
".:~
:~.. .

As of December 10, 1959, the combined water storage in the main stem
reservoir system had risen to approximately 23,800,000 acre-feet. This
represents a gain of about 3,000,000 ac:t'e-feet over the same date a year
ago. The gain in the P!3.St twelve months was accomplished in spite of the
continued sub-norIr<p.l upper basin ,rater supply. This year I s runoff was less
than 80 percent of normal. The current total storage is nearly the equiva-
lent of the average natural flow of the river at Sioux City, Iowa for one
year.

Missouri River Bank Stabilizat10n

and Navigation Project

On this Corps project, authorized to extend from Sioux City, Iowa to
the l-f,issouri I s mouth, construction progress was good in 1959. A total of
28 contracts were awarded during the year; nine between Kansas City and
the mouth, seven bet,reen Omaha and KanSas City, and twelve bet1reen Sioux
City and Omaha. The project is now 93 percent complete from Kansas City to
the mouth; 88 percent complete from Omaha to Kansas City, and 57 percent
from Sioux City to Omaha. Comparable progress is expected to be made in
1960. The work remaining to be accomplished from Omaha to the mouth consists
chiefly of refinements to obtain proper flow alinement, stabilization of
unprotected banks and reinforcement of structures not yet fully effective.

A survey of the Missouri River from Yankton, South Dakota, to the mouth,
to determine the engineering and economic feasibility of slack-water navi-
gation, ,ras authorized by Congress last summer. Preliminary planning for
the survey :i.s \mderway. Completion will require several years. Meanwhile,
work will continue on the authorized "open river" project involving a com-
bination of upstream reservoir releases fuld channel stabilization works,
and a study is being made of extending these ,rorks upstrearn tOYanl,ton,
South Dakota.

The Corps has initiated a restudy of the authorized agricultural levee
progra.'1l along the Missouri from Sioux City to the mouth. This restudy of
the engineering and economic 1'easibility of remaining levee "ork is being
made in vie" Of the long period that has elapsed since authorization in
194k, the control nO,1 assured on the main stem and tributaries, and :further
plans for development of controls in the Kansas River and Grand River
(~lissouri) Basins.

;.,'
.....-

~\~

'4

~ ',<'

r:~

2

. .~.
. ;.~
