It was recommended that jurisdiction <br />over oil and gas deposits owned by the United States in lands comprising <br />the depot be transferred, by public land order, from the Navy Department <br />to the Department of the Interior for prospective leasing. <br /> <br />Minin~ Operations.- Public Service Company, Morgan Coal Company, Pittsburg <br />and M~dway Coal Company and the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad Company <br />have entered into an agreement whereby the companies will produce and <br />ship about one million tons of coal annually from mines in Routt County, <br />COlorado, to Public Service Company steam-power plants in the Denver <br />area. A large portion of the production will be from heretofore un- <br />developed coal deposits on Public lands. <br /> <br />The first production of coal from the Spencer Chemical ~ompany's l~ases <br />near GallUp, New Mexico, was made during January. The coal, 9,000 tons <br />per week, is used in the Arizona Public Service Company's new 115,000 <br />KW steam plant. <br /> <br />At the request of the National Park Service, an investigation into the <br />procedure of sampling and control of production at the Orphan mine, <br />located on a patented mining claim in Grand Canyon National Park, was <br />made in anticipation of the passing of legislation allowing the Park <br />Service to lease ore beyond the end lines of the claim. <br /> <br />Stauffer Chemical Company has started production of soda ash from leases <br />in the Green River Basin, Sweetwater County, Wyoming. <br /> <br />The Metropolitan Water District, on its lease at Danby Dry Lake, Califor- <br />nia, built ten additional evaporation ponds of 2 acres each in order to <br />increase salt production from 50,600 tons to 100,000 tons per year.
