At the request of the National Park Service, an investigation into the procedure of sampling and control of production at the Orphan mine, located on a patented mining claim in Grand Canyon National Park, was made in anticipation of the passing of legislation allowing the Park Service to lease ore beyond the end lines of the claim. Stauffer Chemical Company has started production of soda ash from leases in the Green River Basin, Sweetwater County, Wyoming. The Metropolitan Water District, on its lease at Danby Dry Lake, Califor- nia, built ten additional evaporation ponds of 2 acres each in order to increase salt production from 50,600 tons to 100,000 tons per year. All salt produced goes to its Los Angeles water treatment plant. -'+-
