Elko County; and Gab Valley. Mineral and Nye Counti Reports on
these projects are now completed or are awaiting approval for publica-
tion. In California data on water wells in the Dale Valley area was
published by the State Department of Water Resources.

Chemical quality and sediment.- A new project was begun in California
to inventory the chemical characteristics and hydrologic and geologic
parameters of the major springs throughout the State. The spring waters
will be exhaustively examined for all major constituents. with spectro-
graphic analysis of 17 trace elements.

Reports awaiting apprpval for release or publication as follows: In
California. water quality investigations in Livermore Valley. and
sedimentation of Lake Pillsbury.

Geologic and Mineral-resource surveys and mappin~

Geologic studies and detailed mapping were continued on approximately
50 projects that are wholly or in part within the Pacific Southwest
area. One new project was started in the Mount Wrightson quadrangle.
Arizona. Other new work planned to begin in the Pacific Southwest area
includes: (1) geologic mapping of the Palo Alto quadrangle, California.
the Rico-Animas area. Colorado, and the Salt Lake City and Promontory
Point areas. Utah; (2) detailed geologic. geochemical. and geophysical
studies of the West Tintic and the Park City mining districts. Utah;
and (3) general investigations of the phosphate resources of the Monterey
Shale of California and the saline resources of the Paradox Formation of
Utah. Also planned for the near future are geochemical studies of the
basalts of the Pacific Coast states and the Tintic Quartzite of Utah,
and stratigraphic studies of Lower Cambrian rocks in the Great Basin.

New and continuing geophysical studies will be made in the Safford
Valley. Arizona, and Sacramento Valley and Coast Ranges. California.
Seismic observations of nuclear tests at the Nevada Test Site continue
to provide new information about the structure of major segments of
the earth's crust, and data from long seismic profiles radiating from
the Test Site are being analyzed and interpreted. The seismic studies
are supplemented by other geophysical investigations both in Nevada
and in other parts of the United States.

Significant publications issued during the first half of 1962 include
reports on the East Shasta copper-zinc mining district. California. the
geology of the southeastern part of the Ventura Basin, California. the
stratigraphy of the East Tintic Mountains. Utah. and the heavy minerals
of the Slick Rock area, Colorado. Geologic maps of the Delano Peak
and Marysvale quadrangles. Utah. and the Unionville and Bare Mountain
quadrangles, Nevada. were also published along with an aeroradioactivity
map of the Los Angeles area. California.
