~ ,..

Chapter 2 - Define Water Supply & Water Quality Needs

Sewage Treatment

The Mt. Crested Butte wastewater treatment plant uses an extended aeration
variation of an activated sludge process. Treated discharge is released into
Woods Creek which flows to Washington Gulch. Sludge from the process is
disposed via land application in the summer; The plant experienced seasonal
(Christmas) wastewater hydraulic and organic overloading prior to 1995 (see RTW
2/23/94 No Action Alternative).

Modifications were made in early 1995 to increase plant capacity to 0.6 MGO.
Average peak monthly flows are currently about 0.45 MGD. Improvements
include additional flow equalization, aerator, clarifier capacity, UV disinfection, and
improved sludge treatment and disposal. Additional sludge treatment and a
disposal facility are needed to meet new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
regulations and a preliminary design report has been written concerning a regional
facility with the Town of Crested Butte. RTW has projected average peak
monthly flows of 0.723 MGD by the year 2013 and 0.872 MGD by 2033,
indicating a need for significant plant enlargement.

Crested Butte Mountain Resort

Water Supply

Mt. Crested Butte Water and Sanitation District meets all of the domestic water
supply needs of Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR) with the exception of two
restaurant/warming hut facilities located on the ski mountain and water used for
snowmaking. The two hut facilities, Paradise and Twister, use chlorinated spring
water for their domestic needs. Water is pumped from the East River to meet
current snowmaking needs. This system is capable of pumping about 2,200 to
2,300 gpm (about 5 cfs or 3.2 MGD) and is used primarily during October through
December. Approximately 350 acres of the resort's 612 acres of groomed ski
terrain are covered by snowmaking eqUipment.

Crested Butte Mountain Resort is planning a major ski area expansion on Crested
Butte North Mountain (Snodgrass Mountain) which lies to the north of the existing
ski area development. The snowmaking system planned for North Mountain will
serve approximately 200 acres. The pump station on the East River will deliver
water to its existing snowmaking operation on Crested Butte Mountain and
provide water for the proposed snowmaking system on North Mountain. The
pump station is located adjacent to the diversion point for the Mt.
