Coverage of the snowmaking system will nearly
double when the North Mountain ski area is developed. Also, a 3 MG storage
reservoir may be developed for snowmaking use, to reduce instantaneous
diversions from the river.

Crested Butte Mountain Resort holds an absolute decree of 4.55 cfs (2.9 MGD)
and a conditional decree of 1.45 cfs (0.9 MGD) for snowmaking on Crested Butte
Mountain. Both decrees were adjudicated in 1981, which makes them senior to
the State's instream flow rights. CBMR's snowmaking operation is covered under
a Forest Servi$ special use permit. According to the terms of an agreement
reached among the Colorado Division of Wildlife, CBMR, and the Forest Service,
CBMR is required to limit its diversions, when necessary, in order to maintain a
minimum instream flow of 7.0 cfs in the East River below the CBMR pumping
plant.

CBMR holds a conditional water right for snowmaking on Crested Butte> North
Mountain in the amount of 5.0 cfs (3.2 MGD) which was adjudicatfJd in 1982.
CBMR is limited to making its diversions between October 1 and April 30 in its
snowmaking decrees.

Skyland

Water Supply

The Skyland development and resort, located southeast of the town of Crested
Butte, has its own water supply system, operated by the Skyland Metropolitan
District. The Qistrict currently serves about 40 homes in addition to a 50 unit
lodge and clubhouse. The system is fed by Decker springs with the collection
system located on the southwest side of Crested Butte Mountain. The water right
for the system is for 1.875 cfs (1.2 MGD). which was adjudicated in 1924.
Water is collected in a wetwell, then chlorinated and pumped into a distribution
system. The s~stem provides about 0.06 MGD in summer and 0.025 MGO in
winter and has. about 0.025 MG of raw water storage and 0.25 MG of treated
water storage.

Plans call for 5PO ERU's and a population of about 1,750 at buildout. Future
expansion of tl'le water supply system will be needed to satisfy this population as
well as fire figt;lting needs. Backup wells and additional augmentation may be
needed at full buildout especially in dry years.

59

L

lo.t
,;;
.Ii.
