Officials believe the existing supplies and treatment
capabilities will be sufficient for this ultimate population.

Sewage Treatment

The Town's wastewater treatment facility consists of an extended aeration
activated sludge process to achieve secondary treatment. Treated discharges are
made to the SI~te River. RTW has estimate the capacity of the facility at 0.2
MGO, which is much less than the presently permitted capacity of 0.4 MGD.
Average peak monthly flows are currently 0.453 MGD. Problems may exist with
a leaky aeration tank and unlined sludge disposal lagoon which may have a direct
connection with groundwater. A combined sludge treatment facility with Mt.
Crested Butte is p~~~ently being considered. Dechlorination is also needed.

Proposed improvements for the facility include back-up aeration, increased
chlorination cap, acity, dechlorination, improved sludge treatment and disposal, and
remediation of the leaky aeration tank and unlined sludge disposal lagoon. RTW
has projected average peak monthly flow~ of 0.554 MGD by the year 2013 and
0.732 MGO by 2033, indicating a need for significant plant enlargement.

Mt. Crested Butte Water and Sanitation District

Water Supply

The incorporated town of Mount Crested Butte has its own municipal water
supply system which is operated by the Mt. Crested Butte Water and Sanitation
District. Its water source is a combination of surface water, pumped from the
East River, and springs located on the north side of Crested Butte Mountain.
Water rights inolude an East River direct flow of 2.0 cfs (1.3 MGD). A 1.0 MGD
package water treatment plant is located on the northeast side of the Town along
Gothic Road, which gives the District sufficient capacity to accommodate peak
demands for the next several years. In 1993. 132 MG of treated water was
produced by this facility, with a monthly range of from 5 to 15.5 MG. The
District maintail)s 0.75 MG of raw water storage and 1.2 MG of treated water
storage.

Currently, the district serves about 1,400 units (ERUl, but has the treatment
capacity to serve up to 4,000 at buildout. No expansion plans are imminent.

57

L

t__--~:i

"""..;...>...:i;.,. .iJJ
