Time of Study: April 1978 through March 1979 Sites: Includes sites on Coal Creek, Slate River, East River, Alkali Creek, Ohio Creek, Carbon Creek, Roaring Judy, and Washington Creek (Gulch) See pp. 13 and 14 for map location and description of sites Parameters: pH, Conductivity, Acidity, Alkalinity, Hardness, Dissolved solids, Suspended solids, Turbidity, Ammonia nitrogen, Total phosphate phosphorus, Fluoride, Chloride, Sulfate, Aluminum, Arsenic, Cadmium, Calcium, Copper, Iron, Lead, Magnesium, Manganese, Mercury, Molybdenum, Silver, Zinc, COD, Oil&grease, Fecal coliform Metals measured in their total form see p.15 for the list of parameters measured and the frequency at which they were measured Purpose of Study: As a result of a proposed molybdenum mine located near Crested Butte, Colorado, sampling of water quality and review of previous data was deemed necessary. The study points to the wide variation in water quality within the study area. It notes that water quality within the watershed has been affected by mine drainage. No mining for molybdenum occurs now. A plant to treat acid mine drainage from Keystone Mine was constructed and to this day treats the effluent to Coal Creek with success. Other aspects of the study: The study includes a comprehensive comparison of the data collected for the project and other water quality data. See pp. 65 through 93.
