.

.J r, ~.' (~
f.. v i ...:

Riprap

Three sources of riprap are being considered for Narrows Dam.
These are Fremont Butte, 3 to 4 miles northwest of Akron, Colorado,
the southwest Akron area, 8 to 9 miles southwest of Akron, Colorado;
and the Golden area. Quality of Rock tests and haulage cost studies
indicate that the Golden area--Ralston Quarry--is preferred over the
Fremont Butte and Akron areas, Utilization of the Ralston Quarry
will require transportation of the material about 100 miles to the
Narrows damsite.

Road and Highway Material

Suitable material for road and highway construction is
available in the construction area. In 1950, there were located
in the construction area, three sand and gravel pits used by the
county and one used by the State Highway Department, as well as two
State-approved pits for sandy-clay binder material, Since these
particular sources of material may no longer be available, additional
investigation for road and highway materials may be necessary.

.

Railroad Ballast

Suitable material for railroad ballast to be used in relocating
the Union Pacific Railroad is not available in the area. Types of
ballast acceptable to the railroad company are smelter slag and
granite. The railroad has expressed a preference for use of granite
from their own Sherman Hill Quarry, located in Wyoming, 126 miles
from Fort Morgan, Colorado.

Field Surveys

Topography of the reservoir site and railroad relocation on
a scale of 1" = 400' with a 5-foot contour interval and detailed
topography of the Narrows Dam site on a scale of 1" = 200' with a
2-foot contour interval has been surveyed in the field. Horizontal
control surveys consist of triangulation and traverse tied to the
United States Coast and Geodetic Survey triangulation net. Posi-
tions have been computed in the Colorado State Plane Coordinate
System, North Zone. Vertical control surveys were tied to the
United States Coast and Geodetic Survey level net.

.

A cadastral re-survey was made of the reservoir and rail-
road relocation areas by the Bureau of Land Management. Section
and outside quarter corners were established and monumented for
163 sections of land in 10 townships. Center quarter corners
were established and monumented in 46 of these sections, generally
along the railroad relocation routes.

5
