Non Designated Areas. This area is the entire State
of Arkansas. Major drainage is by the Arkansas, White, Red,
St. Francis and Ouachita Rivers. The total land area is
53,102 square miles.

Terrain varies from flat level delta to
areas with local relief exceeding 1600 feet.
from 2753 feet to less than 200 feet.

steep mountainous
Elevation varies

Arkansas' climate is generally classified as humid sub-
tropical, but considerable variation exists between high eleva-
tions in the north and the southern extremes of the state.
Minimum temperatures frequently fall below freezing in the
southern portion of the state, and occasina11y below zero in
the northern highlands.

Annual precipitation varies from fifty-four inches in the
Ouachita Mountains in West Central Arkansas to forty-two inches
in extreme North Central Arkansas.

Population

1970 census
1975
1985
2000

1,923,295
2,020,311
2,256,972
2,673,783

Earnings
1967 dollars

(thousands)
1975
1,187,260
807,600
34,900

1985
1,456,297
1,956,900
40,150

2000
1,811,905
2,340,000
46,700

Agriculture
Manufacturing
Mining

Agricultural earnings are, in large measure, obtained from
crops such as soybeans, rice, and cotton grown in the delta and
river valley regions of the state. However, significant amounts
of livestock-poultry and cattle are raised in the north west.
Historically, agriculture has been the chief source of earnings
in the State, but as projections indicate, manufacturing is
expected to move ahead.

Water Use (mgd)

105
