Fort Smith. This study involves the entire Fort Smith
SMSA, which consists of four counties; Sebastian and Crawford
in Arkansas, and Sequoyah and LeFlore in Oklahoma. See Arkansas Map 3.

Most of the area is in the Arkansas Valley Region. Terrain
consist generally of low parallel ridges but with valleys dominating.
Most of the agricultural production in the area is in this portion.

The northern most portion of the area extends into the Boston
Mountain Region; these are characterized by steep sided mountains
and deep narrow valleys.

The Fourche Mountains, which occupy the southern extreme of
the area, consist of folded ridges alternated with valleys, similar
to the Arkansas Valley Region. However, in the Forche Mountains,
the ridges are higher and steeper and valleys are narrower with
higher floor elevation.

Population in the area has demonstrated a steady increase
during the past twenty-five years. The following table shows
population projections until 2020:

Population

1985
2000
2020

189,300
213,800
236,300

Earnings
1967 dollars

(thousands)
1985
7,100
196,700

2020
9,400
616,300

2000
7,800
342,400

Agriculture
Manufacturing

Manufacture of electrical machinery is the largest contributor
to the local economy with forest products next followed by food
products. A wide range of other enterprises are also present.

Livestock, soybeans, and hay are the principal sources of
I agricultural earnings.

106
