o
C1
N
N
...
-..1

----.
.

.

Red River Basin above Denison Dam - Bureau of Reclamation:

1. Cache Creek Project (See Map 2) Feasibility investigation
to include a multi-purpose dam and reservoir in the Cache Creek
Basin in Cotton County, Oklahoma, and related facilities to pro-
vide a municipal and industrial water supply for the city of Lawton,
Oklahoma. Consideration will also be given to other beneficial
uses such as flood control, irrigation, recreation, fish and wild-
life and pollution abatement. Southwestern Oklahoma is the most
critical area in the state from the standpoint of the development
of adequate quantities of a suitable quality of water to meet re-
quirements. In recognition of the critical situation the Oklahoma
Water Resources Board (OWRB) has requested that a feasibility re-
port be prepared that would evaluate the potentialities of making
water deliveries to in-basin needs from the Cache Creek Basin as
well as points of need outside the basin. The reconnaissance re-
port, completed in FY 71 states that the city of Lawton is expected
to require water from the Cache Creek Project in about 1980. The
OWRB is extremely interested in the feasibility report on Cache
Creek project as its potential appears to provide for the local
needs as well as the most logical means of alleviating water
shortages in the southwestern part of the State. The investiga-
tion began in FY 1974 and is scheduled for completion in FY 1977.

.

.

.

.)

1

1

.

2. Criner Hills Project (See Map 2) An appraisal investiga-
tion to evaluate the available water resources of a segment of the
Washita River Basin in Carter, Murray and Garvin counties and left
bank tributaries of the Red River in Love County. Consideration
will be given primarily to needs for municipal and industrial
water although other needs will be evaluated, including irriga-
tion, water quality, flood prevention, recreation, and fish and
wildlife. In September 1951, a basin study of the Washita River
was completed. This study evaluated the Purdy reservoir site on
Rush Creek, the Hennepin site on Wildhorse Creek and the Caddo
site on Caddo Creek in the Criner Hills area. Also evaluated
were the Arbuckle site on Rock Creek and mains tern reservoirs at
the Dougherty and Durwood sites. None were selected for develop-
ment in the 1951 report because other sites further upstream
were more favorably located with respect to the basin's needs
of the time. Due to municipal and industrial water needs which
mushroomed in the Criner Hills area about 1960, the Arbuckle
Reservoir was completed in 1967. Also, an interim appraisal of
the Oklahoma State Water Plan studies were completed in FY 1967,
further considered the potential Purdy, Hennepin and Caddo sites
and presented preliminary data for reservoir sites at' Burneyville
and Courtney on Walnut Bayou and Mud Creek, respectively. How-
ever, the appraisal was not of sufficient detail to provide
economic and financial aspects of obtaining water from these
sources. Also, progression of the Oklahoma State Water Plan

.

.

.

1

I

1

.

I.

1

137

1
