OTIlER MAJOR PLANNING STUDIES

Several of the States of the Arkansas-Wbite-Red Region have
summarized studies pertaining to water and related land resources
that have been made, or are on-going or scheduled which are important
to the assessment of water resources in the Region. Data relating
to other major planning studies as submitted by representatives of
the States follow.

ARKANSAS

Other major planning studies in Arkansas are listed and
described in the following:

Corps of Engineers Studies (Level C)

1. Bayou Dorcheat - Arkansas and Louisiana. Bayou Dorcheat
rises in Nevada County in Arkansas and flows in a southerly direction
through Nevada, Lafayette, and Columbia Counties in Arkansas and then
through Webster Parrish in Louisiana. Bayou Dorcheat discharges into
Lake Bistineau. Loggy Bayou, the outlet for Lake Bistineau, flows
through Bossier and Red River Parishes to enter the Red River. The
drainage area above Lake Bistineau is 1173 square miles.

The area is almost entirely rural in character, containing only
a few small towns and numerous remote communities. Industrial and
commercial activity within the area have expanded in recent years,
but not at a fast enough rate to keep up with natural growth. This
has resulted in net out migration from the region over a long period.

The economy of the area is based upon petroleum and gas production,
lumbering and associated activities, ordinance production and small
scale agricultural pursuits. Industry in the area is located in
Magnolia, Arkansas and Minden and Springhill, La.

The following table contains pertinent population data for the
period 1950-1970.

100
