Approximately
60% of the upland area is covered with forests; the remainder is
mostly open pasture. Soils in these upland areas are only moderately
productive. Bottom lands along Bayou Dorcheat and its tributaries
are characterized by low fertility, tight-natured soils that do not
really lend themselves to agricultural production. Thus, these bottoms
are nearly all in woods, with only scattered patches of open pastures.

Timber stands consist primarily of pine, oak, and gum. It is
these stands, along with the oil and natural gas re~urces, that form
the economic backbone of the industrial economy of bhe basin. Exploita-
tion of the forest resources has resulted in the establishment of
numerous lumber mills and allied manufacturing plants; the largest
lumber mill in the basin is the International Paper Mill near Spring-
hill. Other manufacturing currently conducted in the basin includes
food processing, the production of furniture, chemicals, clothing,
and rubber products, and the fabrication of steel.

This project is inactive, and is therefore riot shown on map.

This study would determine if any improvements for flood control,
recreation, municippl and industrial water supply, and allied purposes
are warranted at this time.

101
