ENCLOSURE 1

MEETING SUMMARY
FOR MARCH 2, 1992 - LAS VEGAS NEVADA
DRAFT BIOLOGICAL OPINION - GLEN CANYON DAM OPERATIONS

,;.

This summary of the major points of agreement and conclusions
reached at the March 2, 1994 meeting of native fish expe~ts is
based on the notes taken by Christine Karas. It also
incorporates information from a summary of the meeting prepared
by Frank Baucom of the Fish and Wildlife Service, and comments on
an earlier draft summary made by those meeting participants who
were available. This meeting summary only contains major points
and does not attempt to recount the details of the discussion.
It has not been approved by meeting participants and does not
necessarily represent the opinion of all the participants.
Several commenters recommended details of the discussions be
included, but the difficulty of taking notes during an open
discussion resulted in an unbalanced treatment of the discussion,
which some commenters objected to.

Dr. Duncon Patten served as moderator for the meeting. Due to
limited time, all present agreed to a general format of first
discussing the driving variables for endangered and native fish,
then the flow recommendation of the Draft Biological Opinion and
of the Modified Low Fluctuating Flow alternative. The meeting
took the form of an open discussion of the driving variables.

The group first developed the following list of drivers and
responding parameters to help focus the discussion:

.1

,
'.....'.\
"

''J
f~
~;~

Drivers
Flooding
Tributary Access
Backwaters
Nutrient dynamics
Predation
Thermal regime
Flow variability (annual & daily)
Habitat use by lifestage
Historic habitat changes
Non-native interactions/competition

Sediment
Ponding of tributary mouths
Food Base
Concerns relative to growth
Turbidity
Disease/parasites
Climatic variability
Shoreline habitat

Resoondina Parameters
Spawning
Migration

larval drift
egg/larval
Young of Year
Juvenile

Adults

It was notec! that the overall goal of a reasonable &Dc! pruc!ent
alternative i8 to remove jeopardy, not achieve recovery.
