~
co
l!)
~
Q
C:i

.

.

December 1975 to divert eonveyanee ehannel flows into the floodway, is still in

plaee. The rising water surfaee level of Elephant Butte Reservoir has resulted

in the filling of the low-flow channel with sediments for a distance of some

2 miles north of Nogal Bridge. The snagging operation for removal of trees washed

into the riverbed during high spring runoff was eompleted from Coehiti Dam to

Angostura Diversion Dam by the end of February. This problem was especially

severe from 2 miles below Coehiti Dam to San Felipe Pueblo. The snagging work

was faeilitated by operating Cochiti Reservoir to reduee river-flows during the

time equipment was working in the river.

The Service maintained surveillanee of the westside levee from Rio Puereo to the

Narrows during the period of high runoff and performed emergeney maintenance as

neeessary.

Maintenanee was aeeomplished on previous permit areas and eurrently servieeable

spoil levees downstream from the mouth of the Rio Chama to near Velarde.

During 1980, total flow in the Rio Crande downstream from San Aeaeia Diversion

Dam was approximately 1,339,200 aere-feet, of which "61,300 aere-feet or 49 per-

eent was diverted into the low-flow eonveyanee ehannel. The peak rate of flow

in the floodway during the year was 5,600 eubic feet per seeond (ft3/s).

Cooperative Program with the State

The pipe flume erossing Abo Wash, which was destroyed by flooding in the Veguita

area, was replaeed with a 400-foot-long by 42-ineh-diameter reinforeed eoncrete

pressure pipe siphon. Construetion was eompleted in February 19R1 with funds

advanced by the State and responsibility for O&M has been transferred to the

MRGCD.
