co

r--

UJ
..--l
G
c-:;

.

.

Planning Activities in Rio Grande Basin

Mareh 1, 1980, to Mareh 1, 1981

RIO GRANDE BASIN--GENERAL

During this reporting period, the Serviee has eontinued to provide teehniea1

assistanee to water users and other interests within the Rio Grande Basin whieh

are not neeessari1y eonnected with programs of the San Juan-Chama projeet or

other speeifie projeets in the basin. These miscellaneous areas of teehniea1

assistanee are as follows:

San Luis area, Rio Puereo--In Mareh 1980, the Serviee eomp1eted a techniea1

memorandum on the results of our appraisal investigations on the potential for

building a dam and reservoir on the Rio Puereo near the eommunity of San Luis

and for reestablishing irrigated agriculture in the area from San Luis to

Cabezon. Copies of the memorandum were furnished to representatives of the San

Luis Rural Development Assoeiation and to other interested parties. That

memorandum indieated that land in the area appeared marginal for irrigation

development, which was contrary to the opinion of 10ea1 contaets.

At Senator Pete Domeniei's request, field soil tests were performed last fall

'and laboratory analyses of field samples were recently eomp1eted in order to

answer any remaining questions eoneerning irrigabi1ity of the lands. Results of

testing and analyses verified that, beeause of exeessive erosion and presenee of

salts in the soil, there is essentially no land in the area suitable for

sustained irrigation. A memorandum is being prepared for diatribution to the

interested parties deseribing findings of this additional work, whieh has been

aceomp1ished under our Techniea1 Assistance to States program.
