It was

agreed that the Serviee would atudy alternative solutions for improvements to

the diversion faeilites during fiseal years 1980 and 1981 and make an analysis

of existing diteh problems and possible remedial measures during fiseal year 1982.

Serviee respresentatives toured the area in August 1980 to observe eonditions of

existing diversion struetures, become aequainted with aeeess to the facilities,

and meet loeal people involved in irrigation operations. In Oetober, a teeh-

nieal field review was eondueted to aseertain diversion options and gather field

data for engineering and hydrological analyses. All necessary topographic and

water surfaee elevation data for eaeh diversion site have been obtained and stu-

dies of alternative solutions to the diversion problems are proeeeding on

sehedule. An interim teehnieal memorandum on this first phase of the study is

seheduled for completion by the end of this fiseal year.

San Juan Pueblo diteh heading--Work is eontinuing on providing teehnical

assistanee to the ~ureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) for repair and rehabilitation

of the San Juan Pueblo diteh heading. Topographie ~apping of the area was

eompleted last fall, tailwater and baekwater studies have been eompleted, and

feasibility-grade designs and eost estimates are being prepared of several

alternative sehemes for replaeement or rehabilitation of the present diversion

works. The feasibility study of alternatives and a study memorandum to BIA will
