'The projeet is still in the information and data <br /> <br />gathering stage with a Phase II Avifaunal Census eontraet being issued to <br /> <br />New Mexieo State University during 1980. A cooperative agreement with the Soil <br /> <br />Conservation Serviee (SCS) was initiated early in 1980 for an Order II Soil <br /> <br />Survey of the upper reaehes of Elephant Butte Reservoir. A seeond agreement <br /> <br />with the SCS was initiated late in 1980 for a 1981 Order II Soil Survey of the <br /> <br />upper reaehes of Caballo Reservoir. The survey areas for each reservoir have <br /> <br />low frequeneies of inundation and, eonsequently, are subject to surfaee <br /> <br />management. As results of these Serviee-aponsored studies and project-eonducted <br /> <br />studies beeome available, it is expeeted that an initial working doeument for <br /> <br />the reservoir management plan will be available by the end of 1981. <br /> <br />Based on preliminary data, the recreational use of Elephant Butte and Caballo <br /> <br />State Parks was 963,275 and 252,333 visitations during 1980. Pereha State Park <br /> <br />had 20,393 visitations during the same period. <br />
