Three hanes <br />near Commerce City were undercut and toppled into Sand Creek. <br />Bridges over Sand Creek vere damaged or destroyed. Three lives <br />were lost on Toll Gate Creek. Property damage amounting to <br />$338,000 occurred along Sand and Toll Gate Creeks. Runoff from <br />the Sand Creek basin caused damages along the South Platte River <br />totaling $2,000,000. <br /> <br />(3) Flood of 16 and 17 June 1965. Torrential rain- <br />storms centered over the Plum and Bijou Creek basins on 16 June <br />1965. The storm pattern also extended over the Sand Creek basin. <br />Sand Creek, upstream from Toll Gate Oreek, had an estimated dis- <br />charge of 13,400 cubic feet per second. On Toll Gate Creek, a <br />discharge of 17,000 cubic feet per second occurred near Buckley <br />Field. Downstream from Toll Gate Creek, the peak discharge on <br />Sand Creek vas estimated to be 18,900 cubic feet per second. <br />Highway and railroad bridges crossing Sand and Toll Gate Creeks <br />were damaged or destroyed. About 750 acres of land along Sand <br />Creek and 120 acres along Toll Gate Creek were inundated. Total <br />damages in the Sand Creek basin amounted to about $3,200,000. <br />Sand Creek runoff contributed to record-breaking flooding along <br />the South Platte River downstream from Sand Creek. <br /> <br />b. Cherry Creek basin. Cherry Creek has a long record of <br />floods. Early-day records are fragmentary and generally describe <br />only the major floods. Selected major floods are described <br />briefly in the following paragraphs. More detailed flood histories <br />are presented in appendix III. <br /> <br />( 1) Flood of 19 and 20 May 1864. A severe rain and <br />hailstorm occurred in the Cherry Creek basin during the afternoon <br />of 19 May 1864. Runoff from the storm flooded portions of Denver <br />with from 1 to 5 feet of water. Nineteen lives were lost. No <br />estimate of damages is available. <br /> <br />( 2 ) Flood of 14 July 1912. The 14 July 1912 flood was <br />the result of a storm which originated in the Franktown-Parker <br />V'icinity and moved downstream. Total damages were estimated to <br />be about $1,070,000. <br /> <br />(3) Flood of 2 and 3 AllI(I1st 1933. Late in the afternoon <br />of 2 August 1933, a storm occurred over the area upstream from the <br />then existing Castlewood Dam. The Castlewood Dam vas overtopped <br />and failed. An estimated discharge of 126,000 cubic feet per <br />second occurred immediately downstream from the dam.
