.

Creek Dam. About $600,000
Total estimated damages were

site of the now existing Cherry
damage was inflicted on Denver.
$1,000,000.

(4), Flood of 5 A~st 1945. A rainfall storm over a
widespread area caused considerable flooding south of the Denver
area on 5 August 1945. Severe flooding occurred in the
Franktown-Parker area. The gaging station at Melvin, upstream
from the then existing Kenwood Reservoir, recorded a peak dis-
charge of 10,700 cubic feet per second. Outflow from the
reservoir was held to 4,500 cubic feet per second. Although
this release was augmented by contribution from Goldsmith Gulch
downstream from the reservoir, channel and valley storage reduced
the peak discharge to about 3,100 cubic feet per second. Total
damages were estimated to be $200,000.

(5) Flood of 16 and 17 June 1965. In the Denver area,
up to 14 inclhes of rain were recorded over the Plum Creek basin
during the afternoon of 16 June 1965. From 1 to 10 inches fell
over the Cherry Creek basin. Major flooding occurred along the
main stem of Cherry Creek from the vicinity of Franktown to the
Cherry Creek Reservoir. At the Cherry Creek Reservoir, the
peak discharge was 56,000 cubic feet per second. About 2,720
acres were inundated in this area. One life was lost during the
flood on Cherry Creek. DlIIJUl,ges were about $1,300,000. The
Cherry Creek project contained the inflow from the flood and
prevented an estimated $130 million in dlllJUl,ges in the Denver
metropolitan area.

12. EXISTING IMPROVEMENTS

a' Sand Creek basin.

(1) Federal. Kelly Road Detention Dsm is a small
flood-detention structure on Westerly Creek, a left-bank tribu-
tary of Sand Creek. ~e structure, which is located on the north
edge of LOWl'y Air Force Base, was completed by the Corps of
Engineers in 1954 at a cost of $227,000. It was constructed
under provisions of Section 212 of the Flood Control Act of 1950.
The project consists of a small compacted-earthfill detention
dam located near the junction of the southwest city limits of
Aurora and the southeast limits of the city of Denver. It pro-
vides flood protection for portions of Aurora and Denver.

(2) Non-Federal. Over the years, channel improvements,
spoil bank levees, and bank protection measures have been

16

.
