The flood history of the Sand Creek
basin has produced evidence of at least 21 floods since 1896.
Early flood history is meager. Selected Sand Creek basin floods
are described briefly in the following paragraphs. More detailed
flood histories are presented in appendix III.

(1) Flood of 30 May 1948. A severe rain and hailstorm
occurred on 30 May 1948 over Sand Creek and over the area east of
Denver. The resulting runoff produced discharges on Sand Crllek
estimated at 7,720 cubic feet per second near Buckley Field and
15,000 cubic feet per second at its mouth. Sand Creek floodwaters
contributed to flooding along the South Platte River. Sand Creek
flooding damaged many homes, some tourist cabins, an oil refinery,
business places along U. S. Highway 40, and eroded cultivated
fields. Along the South Platte River, 1,000 acres of cropland
and pasture were inundated and sevel'al county road bridges were
damaged. In Aurora, flows on Westel'ly Creek disrupted traffic,
inundated 32 homes, and closed the sewage treatment plant.
Damages wel'e about $148,000 within the Sand Creek basin and about
$20,500 along the South Platte River. .

(2) Flood of 8 and 9 May 1957. A heavy rainstorm over
the Sand Creek basin on 8 and 9 May 1957 caused major flooding
within the basin and along the South Platte River. Peak dis-
charges were estimated to be 25,500 cubic feet per second on Sand
Creek near Stapleton International Airport and 10,500. cubic feet
per second on Toll Gate Cl'eek near Buckley Field. Flooding was
widespread. Severe dSDlage was inflicted on public ut:l.lities and
on agricultural, residential, and government property. A sewer

14

.
