",.. t: <br />~J.l...J <br /> <br />54 <br /> <br />l1ETROPOLITAN WATEH DISTIlICT <br /> <br />jlliddle feed.,. syslem <br />The middle feeder system currently being constructed in Los <br />Angeles County includes six principal features to be completed in <br />1955. These are (1) the 1500 acre-foot Garvey reservoir in Mon- <br />terey Park with high water elevation 570 feet above sea level, <br />(2) a 72-inch pipe line extending 17 miles from the reservoir to <br />a junction with the existing 54-inch lateral in Victoria Street, <br />adjacent to the north city limits of Long Beach, (3) a GO-inch pipe <br />line G miles long connecting Garvey reservoir with the existing <br />50-inch Palos Verdes feeder near Ascot rese.'voir of the City of <br />Los Angeles water system, (4) a 60-ineh lateral 5 miles long con- <br />necting the Garvey-Victoria Street pipe line to the existing Palos <br />Verdes feeder in the vicinity of Century Boulevard, (5) a lateral <br />4 miles long extending westerly from the Palos Verdes feeder for <br />service to the Inglewood area, and (G) a 45-inch pipe line extending <br />4 miles from the Vietoriav Street lateral to the existing 3G-ineh <br />pipe line in 223rd Street. These projects are to be followed by <br />construction at a later date of " GG-inch pipe line with a eapaeity <br />of 250 cubic feet per second, extending 21 miles from the softening <br />and filtration plant at La Verne to the Carvey reservoir. Location <br />of the facilities described above is shown on figure L <br />Construction of 1,300 feet of the GO-inch Garvey-Ascot pipe <br />line was completed in Hellman Avenue across the Ramona freeway, <br />and construction of 270 feet of the 72-inch Garvey- Vietoria Street <br />feeder across the Santa Ana freeway was nearing completion at <br />the end of the fiscal year. These portions of the system were <br />installed separately in advanee of pavement construction on the <br />affected sections of the f..eeways. <br />A contract for the Carvey-Ascot cross feeder was awarded <br />May 13, 1952, to United Concrete Pipe Corporation for precast <br />concrete pipe construction at a total estimated cost of $2,568,000. <br />Contracts for operation valves and flow meters for the middle <br />feeder system also were awarded during the fiscal year at an aggre- <br />gate cost of $197,000. <br />Plans for the Garvey reservoir and associated portions of the <br />feeder system and control works were nearing eompletion at the <br />end of the fiscal year, with issuance of specifications scheduled <br />early in the succeeding fiscal year, Contract for slide gates for <br />the reservoir outlet tower was awarded in January 1952, at a total <br />price of $20,449. <br />Issuance of specifications for the Victoria Street-223rd Street <br />
