<br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />The Mexican Government is pum~jng f~om well fields located just south of <br />l\:) <br />I-" the International Boundary, which will result in a decline of the ground- <br />l\:) <br />-J water table in the United States. Minute No. 242 limits the quantity of <br />ground water pumped in both the United States and Mexico within 5 miles <br />of the Arizona-Sonora International Boundary to 160,000 acre-feet per <br />year in each country. Protective pumping will protect and utilize the <br />United States ground-water resource. <br /> <br />In order to replace water that is presently being bypassed below <br /> <br />Morelos Dam, Public Law 93-320 includes a provision to construct a new <br /> <br />concrete-lined canal, or to ,line the presently unlined portion of the <br /> <br />first 49 miles of theCoachella Canal. This will result in the salvage <br />of 132,000 acre-feet of water per year which will be used as replacement <br />for stored water now being delivered to Mexico. Utilization of the saved <br />water will continue until there no longer is available surplus Colorado <br />River water for California. There are no other proven sources of additional <br />water in the.1ower basin that can be developed so readily and economically <br />as by lining the Coacne11a Canal. <br /> <br />In conjunction with 1 ining the Coachella Canal the Secretary (Interior) <br />is authorized to acquire private lands, as may be determined by him to be <br />appropriate, \1ithin the Imperial Irrigation D'istrict on the Imperial East <br />Mesa, which receive, or which have been granted rights to receive, water <br /> <br />6 <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />
