.

.

N
....'
t>;1
Q:l

and is located approxi mate 1y 58 mil es ups tream from the Hell ton-r.1ohawk
District. The reservoir has a gross capacity of about 2,500,000 acre-
feet. The Corps of Engineers has acquired fee title to sufficient land
to store about 100,000 acre-feet, with flowage easements on the remainder
of the reservoir area.

Public Law 93-320 authorized acquisition through the Corps of Engineers

of fee title to or additional interest in, other lands in the reservoir
t
area which are needed to minimize the infiltration of floodwaters into

the Well ton-Mohawk aquifer. These lands would not be acquired, however,
until it is finally determined by a Federal court of competent jurisdiction
that the Corps of Engineers presently lacks legal authority to use the

reservoir area for temporary storage.

Another feature of the project i ncl udes the py'otecti ve and regul atory
pumping well fields. The Bureau of Reclamation, in cooperation with
the United States 'Section, International Boundary and Water Commission.

has tentatively located two potential well fields on the south Yuma t1esa

and in the southwestern portion of the Yuma Valley. Both fields will be

"' ",,' "-~

- ~o; ,;.' ".J . .~_.--

drilled within 5 miles of the Arizona-Sonora International Boundary near

San Luis. The disposition of the pumped water will be to maintain

Southerly International Boundary deliveries to Mexico near levels experienced

in recent years, as required under Minute No. 242.

5
