.

Woodward.Clyde Consultants

0983

~

I

reservoir capacity, operation and overall designs for the

spillways and outlet works structures and economic and

environmental factors.

Our work also included the review of three separate

reports written by Thomas M. Leps, George F. Sowers and Howard

A. Coombs who constituted an independent panel assembled by the

Bureau for a similar evaluation of the safety of the dam and

its foundation. Any significant differences in our

recommendations and conclusions from those of the Bureau

consultants are covered by our narrative discussions in this

report.

3. General Description of the Dam and Site

The Narrows dam site as shown on Figure 1 is located on

the South Platte River upstream approximately 7 miles from the

city of Ft. Morgan in Morgan County, Colorado. A zoned earth

dam as shown by the Bureau's feasibility design drawing

553-0-24, Figures 3 and 4, is planned. The maximum section has

an approximate height of 147 feet above streambed to the crest

elevation of 4454.0 feet. The total crest length is about

22,500 feet which includes a considerable length of low

abutment dikes for flood storage purposes.

The dam site is located on a portion of the South Platte

River where the present river channel is several miles north of

an old deep channel now filled with alluvium. The bedrock at

the site is the pierre formation consisting of shaley siltstone

>>

- 4 -

(I
