Page 15

PUBLIC RECREATIONAL FACILITIES

Information on the development of recreational facilities at the various
project locations has been included in the narrative explanations of the
specific unit or participating project.

FISH AND WILDLIFE DEVELOPMENT

The Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife worked in cooperation with the
various state fish and game departments to accomplish the following fish
and wildlife developments during fiscal year 1967:

(1) Blue Mesa, Flaming Gorge, and Navajo Reservoirs were stocked
with 3.8 million fish from Federal hatcheries. Two-thirds of these were
rainbow trout fingerlings. The newly-impounded Blue Mesa received 1.5
million of the fingerlings. The channel catfish and largemouth bass
plantings were confined to Navajo Reservoir. In addition, state facilities
provided numbers of brown trout, kol~nee salmon, and crappie for stocking
in suitable portions of ~he reservoir system.

(2) Construction continued on the 14-mile access road to Jones Hole
National Fish Hatchery, Utah. The road contract for $1,171,685, awarded
in F. Y. 1966, was modified in response to the flood conditions observed
in July 1966. Plans for the hatchery site were also revised to include
supplemental flood control features. Award of a contract for $728,986 was
made June 12, 1967, for Phase II features of the diversion channel, water
supply structures, and concrete raceways. Cost sharing arrangements by
the Bureau of rand Management and the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife
were completed for fencing the access road right-of-way.

(3) The Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife continued operation
of the Chipeta Rearing Unit, ao10rado. This unit, together with the North
Fork Trout Farm, will be developed as the Delta National Fish Hatchery to
serve the reservoir complex of the Curecanti Unit as well as the stocking
requirements of nearby participating projects. The Delta National Fish
Hatchery produced 65,000 pounds of rainbow trout during F. Y. 1967. At
the North Fork Unit of the hatchery, options were obtained for 25 additional
acres needed for access road alignment and borrow material required for
road grade and site preparation. Progress also included near-completion of
the $290,000 access road contract. The Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wild-
life appraised, and negotiated for, potential public fishing easement areas
on the Gunnison Ri ver and major tributaries above Blue Mesa Reservoir in
cooperation with the Colorado Department of Game, Fish and Parks. Initial
emphasis was placed on a key tract of 65 acres, which was optioned during
F. Y. 1967. This area will implement both boating and bank-fishing use
immediately upstream from the reservoir headwaters.

other developments not mentioned in the above are included in the narrative
explanations of the specific unit or participating project.
