<br /> <br />Page 8 <br /> <br />A boat dock and other improvements are under contract. A test well <br />has been drilled and a boat-launching ramp has been completed at the <br />Iola Site. <br /> <br />The Bureau of Sport Fisheries and vlildlife, in cooperation with the <br />Colorado Fish and Qt.me Department, performed the following during F. Y. 1967: <br /> <br />(1) ~ecuted a contract in June 1967 for the first segment of a <br />6-year study at the Curecanti Unit complex of Blue Mesa, Morrow Point, and <br />Crystal Reservoirs. This study is to obtain information necessary to <br />develop superior fishing. <br /> <br />(2) Optioned 65 acres of private land on the Gunnison River immediately <br />upstream from the Blue Mesa Reservoir headwaters. When access right-of-way <br />and necessary land exchanges are completed, this public site will aid both <br />streamside and float fishing use. As a related weasure, engineering speci- <br />fications were completed a.ld a $105,000 construction contract executed for <br />two fishing lakes on Archuleta Creek. Known as Dome lakes, these impound- <br />ments will be the first in the ser i e s of fishing lakes intended to offset <br />stream-fishing losses on the Gunnison River. <br /> <br />GLEN CANYON STORAGE UNIT, ARIZONA - UTAH <br /> <br />The Glen Canyon Unit is located in northern Coconino County, Arizona, and <br />in !(Sne and San Juan o:>unties in southeastern utah. The primary purposes <br />of the unit are the regulation and storage of flows of the upper Colorado <br />River and the generation of hydroelectric power. The last of eight <br />generators, each of which has 112,500 kilowatt capacity, began producing <br />commercial power on February 28, 1966. The powerplant has a nameplate <br />rating of 900,000 kilowatts. Net power generation to date is 6,770,601,200 <br />kilowatt hours. The water surface elevation of lake Powell behind Glen Canyon <br />Dam was at its highest point during F. Y. 1967 of 3,544.91 at midnight on <br />JUly 1, 1966. The elevation at midnight on June 30, 1967, was 3,529.15 <br />compared to 3,544.91 at midnight on JUne 30, 1966. <br /> <br />Construction continued on the joint Bureau of Reclamation-National Park <br />Service visitor center complex at Glen Canyon Dam. As of JUne 30, 1967, <br />. the contract was 97.7% completed. A Memorandum of Agreement was executed <br />during 1966 under which the Bureau will provide the building and all major <br />maintenance. The National Park Service will finance and construct exhibits <br />and will staff the building. The visitor center and the associated self- <br />guided tour through the Glen Canyon Powerplant were open for visitors during <br />the summer of 1967. <br /> <br />Recreation facilities have been constructed and improved constantly since <br />the storage of water began at lal,e Powell. Wahweap and u.es Ferry in <br />Arizona have boat ramps, campgrounds, picnic areas, marinas, parking areas, <br />and water distribution and sewage disposal systems. Wahweap also has an <br /> <br />
