001582

.

.

of the three major dams compr~s~ng the Curecanti unit--is substan-
tially completed. Exploratory drilling at the damsite is moving
ahead. Present schedules call for invitations for bids for the
Crystal Dam and Powerplant within the next few weeks. The dam will
be an earthfill structure about 220 feet high, 730 feet long, con-
taining about 1,900,000 cubic yards of materials. Work will also
include constructing a powerplant, to house one 28,000 kilowatt
generator, and a switchyard.

At Rifle Gap Dam, principal feature of the SILT PROJECT,
major construction activity during the reporting period includes
placement of dam embankment, excavation for the spillway stilling
basin, placement of concrete in the outlet works intake structure,
and grouting in the outlet works tunnel and in the dam abutments.
Placement of embankment in the dam has reached a point where very
little additional embankment work can be accomplished prior to
diversion of the stream through the outlet works tunnel. Comple-
tion of the stilling basin and outlet works tunnel is of prime
importance because it is a prerequisite to diversion of the stream.
Diversion is scheduled for Spring of 1966.

Construction on other features of the project--the Silt
Pump Canal, silt pumping Plant, Davie Ditch, and Dry Elk Valley
Lateral and Grass valley Canal Rehabilitation--continued through-
out the period, but progress was retarded by cold weather.

Feasibility Investiqations and Reports

A feasibility report on the WEST DIVIDE PROJECT, Colorado,
dated January, 1966 has been distributed for preliminary review
by interested agencies within the state.

The West Divide Project, located in west-central Colorado,
would provide water for irrigation and for municipal and industrial
purposes in connection with development of nearby oil shale reserves.
It would als.o provide benefits to recreation, fish and wildlife,
and flood control. Project water would be obtained principally
from the Crystal River with lesser amounts from other tributaries
of the Colorado River.

A feasibility report on the SAN MIGUEL PROJECT, located in
Montrose and San Miguel Counties of southwestern Colorado, has been
completed and will be distributed to interested agencies in the near-
future.

LDM: lk

-2-

. ~ ._.'~~
