" 001581 . f PACIFIC SOUTHWEST INTER-AGENCY COMMITTEE Quarterly Report for Colorado 66-1 Meeting Construction Blue Mesa Dam of the CURECANTI UNIT has been topped out and, -except for riprap remaining to be placed on the upstream face of the dam, the contractor has completed placement of fill in the dam. After closure of the diversion tunnel on October 27, storage of water behind Blue Mesa Dam began. The water impounded has already formed a lake approximately 12 miles long. The powerplant structure at the toe of the dam is essentially complet- ed. Work remaining under the prime contract includes placement of the downstream plug in the diversion tunnel, work on excavation for the channel improvement below the dam, surfacing the highway across the crest of the dam, and modification of the outlet works-- most of which is well under way. The upstream plug in the diversion tunnel is in place and completed. Overall completion under the prime contract is over 98 percent. On December 2 a $1,245,000 contract was awarded to the Eagle Construction Corporation of Loveland, Colorado, for comple- tion of the Blue Mesa Powerplant, to include installation of turbines, generators, and other electrical equipment, and construc- tion of the switchyard for the plant. The powerplant is scheduled to go into operation in early 1967. All work under the contract to clear Blue Mesa Reservoir has been accomplished. At Morrow Point Dam, virtually all outside work has come to a halt due to the cold weather. Concrete placements in the dam as well as other outside work will be resumed in the spring as soon as weather permits. Underground excavation, drilling and installation of rock bolts, tunnel supports and chain-link fabric continues in the Penstock and foundation tunnels and in the power- plant chamber. Work under the contract is almost 40 percent com- pleted. The difficult access road into the crystal damsite--third of the three major dams comprising the Curecanti unit--is substan- .':1.-
