<br />I <br /> <br />001007 <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />Of the 12 species of raptors which use the study area, <br /> <br />the <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />two most common breeding species are the American kestrel <br /> <br />and the great-horned owl. <br /> <br />Other raptorial breeding species <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />utilizing the area are the red-tailed hawk, golden eagle, <br /> <br />marsh hawk, <br /> <br />and the prairie falcon. <br /> <br />Wetlands in the area, <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />which include cottonwood stands along the Uncompahgre River, <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />are pa~ticularly <br /> <br />important for feeding, <br /> <br />roosting, <br /> <br />and <br /> <br />nesting of raptors. <br /> <br />The mild ~inters, <br /> <br />agricultural lands, <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />and river bottom areas which characterize the study area <br /> <br />also provide important ~intering habitat. <br /> <br />Winter popula- <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />tions are dominated by the red-tailed hawk, <br /> <br />marsh hawk, <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />American <br /> <br />kestrel, and <br /> <br />golden eagle but the <br /> <br />bald <br /> <br />eagle, <br /> <br />goshawk, <br /> <br />Cooper's hawk, <br /> <br />rough-legged hawk, prairie <br />, <br /> <br />falcon, <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />merlin, and g~eat-horned owl also occu~. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />H.
