All five canals to be lined are located

east of the Uncompabgre River in the Mancos Shale Formation.

The lower Gunnison Basin Unit is currently awaiting funding

for advance planning studies and future construction.

Although most of the surface water in the Uncompabgre
drainage is derived from snowmelt, the quality deteriorates
as tbe water flows downstream. In particular, the
Uncompahgre River and its tributaries are subject to
pollution from mine drainage, highly mineralized natural
runoff, agriculture and occasional construction activity.2

Water SunDlv ~ ~

About 86,000 acres of land receive irrigation water from tbe

Uncompahgre Project. Some Df the irrigation water is

provided by storage releases from Taylor Park Reservoir

(106,200 acre feet) on the Taylor River about 70 miles east

of the study area.

E-11
