In addition, the Secretary was authorized

and --,jirected to expedite completion of planning reports 'On

twelve other units, including the Lower Gunnison Basin Unit.

Public Law 96-375 of October 1980 authorized the feasibility

level investigations for the Lower Gunnison Basin Unit,

which were completed and published in December 1982.1

The salt pickup from the Lower Gunnison Basin Unit is mostly
attributable to deep percolation into the groundwater system
from conveyance system seepage and irrigation. The seepage

and percolation waters dissolve salts from the soil and the

underlying Mancos Formation. Consumptive use of water and

evaporation leave higher concentrations of salts in the

return flow entering the UncolLpahgre and Gunnison Rivers

directly or tbrough the groundwater system. Because of the
weathered and fractured nature of the parent shale, the
groundwater readily flows to drains or directly into the
rivers.1

Several alternatives were evaluated which would reduce the

salt contribution of the Uncompahgre Valley. The plan

recommended by the study team and adopted by the Bureau of

Reclamation includes installing concrete lining on all un-

lined portions of tbe South Canal (on which proposed hydro

projects Nos. 1-5 are located), lining four other canals in

E-10
