The Uncompahgre

Valley Water Users Association operates and maintains the pro-

ject canals and associated laterals.

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

At the present time, the Uncompahgre Project is operated during
the irrigation season, approximately 7 months per year (March -
November). However, the Uncompahgre Valley Water Users Asso-
ciation delivers stock water through much of the delivery
system in the winter season. According to estimates, a maximum

of about 20 percent of capacity flow is delivered in the winter

through ab~ut 70 percent of the system. Winter flows are not

1

passed through the South Canal.

Since the 1940's, the Bureau of Reclamation has studied alter-

natives for water supply development in the Uncompahgre River

Basin. The Dallas Creek Project, currently under construction

on the Uncompahgre River just south of the existing Uncompahgre

Valley Irrigation Project, represents the culmination of the

studies. The Tri-County Water Conservancy District, sponsoring

agency for the project, will be responsible for marketing the

water upon completion of the project. Project facilities will

include Ridgway Reservoir and associated recreational and fish

E-3
