The BLM estimates that
salinity control on public lands in the Basin could potentially
reduce the salinity of the Colorado River by about 150,000 tons
per year (15mg/L) at Imperial Dam. The BLM manages the public
lands according to the multiple use concept and, to date, salinity
control has not been considered to be a significant problem compared
to others faced by the BLM, The BLM should elevate the priority

of salinity control activities in managing the public domain

.

within the Colorado River Basin, BLM should include salinity
control as a major objective of its land management program, and
increase the personnel in state offices to provide technical

assistance in additional project development.
The BLM 1978-79 Status Report identifies Salt Creek, in
Sinbad Valley, Colorado, as a potential salinity control project
which is technically and econorrlically feasible and cost-effective.

Senate Bill 2202 authorizes the construction of the Sinbad
Valley Unit, Colorado, to reduce the salt contribution to the
Colorado River from lands administered by the BLM, The Council
is pleased that BLM has budgeted $140,000 and directed those funds
to the Colorado state office to begin implementation of the
Sinbad Valley Unit. Funds should be budgeted in fiscal year 1983
. to complete construction prerequisites and in fiscal year 1984

_-..t~
