<br />The contents of this section should help to clarify certain aspects
<br />of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. Most of the answers provided
<br />are condensed from memos prepared by Department of the Interior
<br />solicitors. within each Section, the questions and answers are
<br />presented in.chronological order. Dates 10 parenthesis refer to
<br />the time the memo was originally released. A more comprehensive
<br />aDalysiR of each issue can be obtained by consulting those docu-
<br />ments.

<br />Unless otherwise noted, the word "Secretary" refers to the Secretary
<br />.of the Interior, or, ~here national forest lands are involved, the
<br />Secretary of Agriculture. Three types of rivers are mentioned in
<br />the Act and are discussed frequently in this paper: "instant"
<br />(Section'3(a)) rivers); "study" (Section 5(a) rivers); and
<br />"5(d)" (rivers listed by the Secretary pursuant to the requirements
<br />of Section 5(d)).
