.

Municipal and Industrial

As the population and economy of northeastern
Colorado increase, the demand for water for use in
homes, businesses, and industry also increases.
Communities and industrial users in the area have
expressed interest in obtaining a water supply
from the project.

Fish and Wildlife

Preservation of fish and wildlife has long been an
ideal associated with western life. In this spirit,
land adjacent to the reservoir will be acquired to
replace habitat lost or damaged by the project.

Narrows Reservoir will support large populations
of walleye, northern pike, largemouth bass, white
bass, crappies, sunfish and catfish. The overall
program will be managed by the Colorado Divi,
sion of Wildlife, Under the 1976 plan, a fish
hatchery would be constructed downstream from
the dam.

Recreation

Loca ted just 70 air miles from the Denver metro
area, the Narrows Unit is expected to draw more
than a million visitors annually-with that
number doubling in 10 years. Major activities will
include boating, water skiing, swimming, hunting
and fishing, picnicking, hiking, and sightseeing.
Facilities may include boat, launch ramps. landing
docks, picnic and camping sites, restrooms, access
roads, and parking areas. Four public use areas
are planned-three at Narrows and one atJ ackson
Lake. Facilities will be managed by the Colorado
Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation,

.

~ ~,

Several communities have expressed in-
terest in Narrows Unit water for municipal
and industrial purposes,

Flood control

Operation of Narrows Reservoir will also provide
flood protection for downstream communities and
farms located near the river. A gated, concrete'
lined service spillway will discharge controlled
floodwater back into the river, while an auxiliary
spillway on the north abutment of the dam will
operate during major floods.

Hydro potential

Reclamation studied the possibility of building a
small hydroelectric powerplant at the damsite, but
results show construction by the Federal Govern,
ment is not economically justified.
