The districts must then
execute subcontracts with water users, Contracts
between Reclamation and the State of Colorado
concerning the sharing of costs for various
recreation and fish and wildlife functions at the
reservoir must also be executed.

Reclamation officials conducted a public meeting
in Fort Morgan in January to explain the resump'
tion of activity, Meetings have also been held with
the news media and with the two conservancy
districts.

"~"

1
I

Reclamation crews drill an angle hole to
obtain information concerning geologic
materials beneath the Narrows damsite.

.

1976 Plan

Based on 1976 plans, the unit will consist of an
earthfill dam 4.2 miles long and 147 feet high
containing two separate spillways, When com,
pleted, Narrows Reservoir will be the largest body
of water in Colorado,

In addition to construction of the dam and
reservoir, plans include obtaining and improving
nearby Jackson Lake for recreation and fish and
wildlife use. If work were to start on the project in
1984, it is estimated that first water could be
delivered in 1992 and all work finished by 1994.
The Administration would have to recommend
and the Congress appropriate construction fund,
ing before additional work could begin.

Benefits

The Narrows Unit will provide many benefits,
including water for irrigation, recreation,
municipal and industrial use, and fish and wildlife
habitat improvement. In addition, the dam and
reservoir will provide storage to control flooding.

Irrigation

Additional water from Narrows Reservoir will
boost both crop and livestock production. Under
the 1976 plan, some 102,000 acre,feetofsupplemen,
tal irrigation water will be available for use on
287,000 acres of farmland in Sedgwick, Adams,
Weld, Logan, Morgan, and Washington Counties.

The Lower South Platte and Central Colorado
Water Conservancy Districts will contract with
local entities and individuals for water sales,

District requests indicate demand for Narrows
water is greater than the potential supply. South
Platte water rights will be administered by the
State Engineer and water will be allocated
according to the State's priority system.
