w Status Preconstruction work recently resumed on the Narrows Unit, funded by the Administration and Congress and supported by the Governor of Colorado and the Colorado General Assembly. Congress recently approved a transfer of $500,000 in this year's Reclamation budget so that preconstruction worlj: could get underway, The President also recommended an. additional $500,000 to fund work in fiscal year 1983. In July 1981, the Colorauo General Assembly authorized the newly formed Water Resource and Power Development Authority to pledge some $25 million in State funding for construction of the Narrows Unit in northeastern Colorado, and the Animas,LaPlata Project on Colorado's West Slope. Furthermore, the Governor included funds in his 5-year capital improvements program equal to about 10 percent of these p~ojects' costs. Preconstruction activities will be conducted dur, ing the remainder of fiscal year 1982 and fiscal year 1983 to review and update information required to ready the project for construction, . -Geologic mapping in the damsite area is being conducted and holes are being drilled to provide additional information to designers concerning geologic materials below the damsite. Some 140 holes have been drilled since the project's incep, tion in 1943. Test pits are also being dug to determine suitability of material available. -A review of hydroiogic data, including streamflow and water use and demand informa, tion, is being conducted. -Much of the above information will be used in the review of the dam design and in updating the project's estimated cost. Activities necessary to. ready the project for construction will be com, pleted by summer 1983. -The final environmental statement, published in 1976, will be reviewed during 1982. Consultation with the Fish ,and Wildlife Service concerning compliance with Endangered Species Act .re- quirements will resume. -Consultation ,with local, State, Federal, and private entities will c;ontinue.
