;;;;;;;;# ~

Michael H. Peterson, Chairman
Recreation Technical Subcommittee
PSIAC

001496

New Mexico State Planning Department, arranged a trip to the Cochiti
Reservoir and dam site which is under construction near the confluence
of the Rio Grande and Santa Fe Rivers. The Cochiti project is being
developed by the u.s. Army Corps of Engineers under an agreement with
the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Pueblo of Cochiti. Proposed and
planned recreation facilities were of special interest to the subcomm~ttee
members. The committee concluded that) liAs a recreation resource, the
reservoir and recreational facilities are expected to be used heavily by
residents of the cities of Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Los Alamos". On
returning from the Cochiti site, members of the subcommittee visited the
Sandia Ski Area north of Albuquerque. The business meeting included a
report from Mr. J. Stanley Elmer that in-puts provided by the Recreation
Technical Subcommittee, in relation to the Jordan River Study which was
presented at the 72-3 meeting, were used in the proposed legislation to
create a Jordan River Parkway Authority in Salt Lake City. Mr. Clarence
M. Maesner, Portland Office of the USDA-SCS, agreed to serve as Chairman
of the Recreation Technical Subcommittee for the 1973-74 term.

The 73-2 meeting was held June 19-21, 1973 in San Francisco,
California. A field trip was conducted by the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation,
Corps of Engineers and the Bureau of Reclamation at Lake Berryessa. This
Bureau of Reclamation Reservoir is located within a two hour drive of the
San Francisco metropolitan area. A controversial water-based recreation
area, limited public recreation facilities and intensive private use of the
adjoining lands have been factors which influenced the conflicts surround-
ing Lake Berryessa.

The Recreation Technical Subcommittee considered the State of
California's efforts in reorganizing the PSIAC and does not support any
reorganization that would change the status of existing subcommitties
that are productive1Y,fulfi1ling their roles within PSIAC. Mr. Clarence
Maesner was installed as the Chairman of the Recreation Technical Sub-
committee for the 1973-74 fiscal year.

23
