<br />17 <br /> <br /> <br />001493 <br /> <br />with the University of California at Davis for a three-year study by <br />the University on uses of anti-transpirants to reduce transpiration <br />rate of selected phreatophytes. <br /> <br />The Bureau of Reclamation solicited proposals from universities and <br />research oriented firms for a three-year program to study impacts of <br />vegetation management on wildlife along the lower Colorado River. The <br />three-year program will be funded at a level of about $50,000 per annum. <br /> <br />Mr. R. C. Culler stated that the collection of field data on the Gila <br />River Phreatophyte Project will be continued through November 1972. <br /> <br />72-4 Meeting - San Diego, California - December 6, 1972 <br /> <br />Mr. Morton, ARS, outlined the scope of vegetation control and farmland <br />weed control studies being conducted by his agency at eleven locations <br />throughout the Pacific Southwest. <br /> <br />Mr. J. S. Horton, Forest Service Research, reported that the state of <br />the arts on use of water by plants, which is the joint participation <br />among Forest Service, University of Arizona, and Arizona Water <br />Commission, is being final ized. <br /> <br />In a review of plans to clear the Gila River to prevent flood control <br />in Graham County, Arizona, and an injunction to stop clearing, Mr. <br />A. V. Potter, Corps of Engineers, reported the Gila Valley Irrigation <br />District and County Board of Supervisors filed a suit seeking payment <br />from the Sierra Club for flood damages caused by heavy rains in <br />October. <br /> <br />The Bureau of Reclamation, Mid-Pacific Region, Sacramento, California, <br />is continuing its cooperative program with the University of Cal ifornia <br />at Davis in studying effects of anti-transpirants on phreatophytes, and <br />negotiations on a three-year contract to study impact of vegetation <br />management upon wildlife along the lower Colorado River. <br /> <br />I . <br /> <br />Mr. Culler reported that Geological Survey has ceased collecting data <br />on the Gila River Project, and that data through June 1972 were being <br />published in the Geological Survey #655 series. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Mr. Jack Koogler reviewed the current water outlook for New Mexico <br />and called attention of the subcommittee to the tangled mass of cotton- <br />wood and other natural vegetation reoccurring on irrigated lands where <br />irrigation water was suspended in some cases over a period of ten years, <br />cautioning that some brush removal projects, if not managed properly, <br />may consume more water than saved. <br /> <br />The Department of Interior has assigned the Geological Survey as lead <br />agency for the Resources and land Information Program (RAll).
