<br /> <br />ANNUAL REPORT FISCAL YEAR 1973 <br />VEGETATION MANAGEMENT TECHNICAL SUBCOMMITTEE <br /> <br />Our objectives primarily were to stimulate research that would serve <br />to guide in the management of watershed vegetation for the improvement <br />of quantity and quality of water yi~lds, and to catalog and store <br />information for groups and individuals Interested. <br /> <br />Officers for the calendar year 1972 were: <br /> <br />C. W. Bowser (BR), Chairman <br />A. V. Potter (CE), Secretary <br /> <br />Officers for calendar year 1973 were: <br /> <br />Jack Koogler (New Mexico State Engineer's Office), Chairman <br />Floyd Farrell (BIA), Secretary <br /> <br />Four meetings and one field trip were held by the subcommittee during <br />the fiscal year. <br /> <br />72-3 Meeting - Salt Lake City, Utah - September 6, 1972 <br /> <br />Mr. J. S. Horton, Forest Service (Research), announced his retirement <br />but did say he would carryon for sometime his association with the <br />Hydrology Lab at Tempe. He further advised the committee that the <br />phreatophyte library will be continued at Tempe while he is there, <br />and tentative plans are to move it to Fort CoIl ins, Colorado, onCe <br />he is no longer associated with the Hydrology Lab. <br /> <br />Mr. R. C. Culler, Chairman, Task Force Report, announced that the <br />Earth Resources Technology Satellite I was launched on July 23, 1972, <br />by NASA. A prel iminary examination of images indicated that a positive <br />identification by species of phreatophytes may not be possible; however, <br />an inventory of major concentrations of phreatophytes may be possible by <br />studying the repetitive images during a growing season. <br /> <br />A request by Mr. Bowser, Chairman, was directed to the research and <br />action agencies, particularly States, requesting that they consider <br />a joint proposal of the ARS and USBR to prepare a statement of what <br />information is desired or necessary in the foreseeable future to <br />support vegetation management programs, and the extent of investiga- <br />tions recommended to provide the desired information. <br /> <br />The Bureau of Reclamation initiated a program with the California <br />Department of Parks and Recreation and Fish and Game, and the <br />El Dorado Irrigation District, leading to vegetation plantings for <br />recreation and wildlife enhancement.
