The <br />City of Cardena was annexed to the West Basin District and to the <br />Metropolitan Water District December 9, 1948, The terms and <br />conditions of the original annexation included provisions for con- <br />struction of a pipe line extending from the Palos Verdes feeder <br />westerly to Aviation Boulev>Lrd in the vicinit:l' of Manhattan Beach <br />Boulevard, a distance of 6,59 miles. with five turnouts for service <br />to constituents of the West Basin district, At the request of the <br />West Ba"in authorities, an ,'greement was entered into providing <br />for extension of the pipe line to Redondo Avenue in the City of <br />Manhattan Beach, an add itiunal .25 mile, the cost of the extension <br />to be defrayed by the West Basin District, <br />Specificatjc'ns were prepared covering two alternative types of <br />construction for a 45-inch diameter pipe line; (1) lock-joint steel <br />cylinder-reinforced precast concrete pipe and (2) welded steel <br />pipe with spun mortal' lining and machine-placed gunite or mortar <br />exterior coating, The extended portion was included as a separate <br />schedule for convenient segregation of cost. On December 17, 1948, <br />a contract was awarded to United Concrete Pipe Corporation at <br />its low hid of ~1.247.:l60,20 for a precast concrete pipe line. <br />The pipe line extends from the Palos Verdes feeder in Avalon <br />Boulevard weoterly along Redondo Beach Boulevard and Manhattan <br />Beach Boulevard to terminal delivery structures at Redondo Ave- <br />nue, where service connections are provided for the cities of EI <br />Segundo and Manhattan Belich, and for California Water Service <br />Company for distribution in the cities of Hermosa Beach and <br />Redondo Beach. Delivery facilities provided initially at inter- <br />mediate points along the line inclnde (1) a connection at Normandie <br />Avenue for service to Southern California Water Company, and <br />(2) a connection at Inglewood A venue for service jointly to <br />Southern California Water Company and California Water Service <br />Compan,', this turnout being designed for subsequent amplification <br />to afford service to A irwa)'s Water Company and Los Angeles <br />County Water Works District No. 22, The plans provide for an <br />interconnection at Normandie Avenue with the Harbor trunk line <br />of the water system of the City of Los Angeles, which will afford <br />limited temporar,' service in the event of outage on the District <br />system. At the close of the fiscal year the West Basin feeder was <br />approximately 66 per cent completed. <br />
