~ J'i i\

56 METROPOLITAN WATER DISTRICT

cipal items being operating; tables for the filters and zeolite soften-
ers, a lime conveyor-elevator, pumping equipment, organic cation
exchanger for an operating test in one of the softener units for
comparison with the synthetic silicious zeolite, and salt for zeolite
regeneration.
Several features desired for improving the operatioll of the plant
were designed and included under the construction contract as extra
work, These included a pump structure equipped with two 400-gpm
deep-well pumps for lifting finished water from the main effluent
conduit to supply the high tank in the headhouse tower. This in-
stallation will afford a reliable and ample supply of finished water
for plant operation purposes, replacing two 300-gpm pumps located
in the venturi meter van It, maintenance of which had occasioned
some difficulty. Another added feature is an access vault with an
assembly of easily removable fittings for use in cleHlling out the
brine pipe lines extending from the salt storage bas ill>' to the zeolite
softener buildings.
Several accessory facilities for the plant were designed for
installation by District forces. These include (1) a feed tank and
piping system for applicatioll of activated silica to the influellt
water for coagulation purposes in conjunction with lime softening;
(2) a portable transfer pump, 3,OOO-gpm capacity, for unwatering
the mixing and settling basins both of the previously existing and
the expanded plant; (3) a conveyor for delivering lime from one
of the storage bins ill the headhouse to a spout for loading trucks
for transfer to the lime hopper in the expanded plant; and (4) a
motorized portable conveyor for transporting gravel into and out
of the zeolite softener beds.
Studies had been made previously alld a portioll of the necessary
equipment procured for construction of an experimental pilot plant
of 300-gpm capacity for electrolytic softening of water, The pilot
plant is to be constructed following completion of the main softening
plant expansion when a suitable site can be cleared, Designs for
the mechanical and electrical features of the plant were developed
in collaboration with the owner of the patents covering the processes
involved, The District's use of the patented processes is covered by
license agreement,

I
I
j

~

lVp.~t B(I$'!"n feeder

West Basin Municipal Water District, originally comprising the
cities of EI Segundo, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Bl'ach, Redondo
