These extensions include the West Basin
feeder and several separate connections along the existing Palos
Verdes feeder for service to West Basin Municipal Water District,
annexed July 23, 1948; the Victoria Slreet lateral, initially for
augmenting service to the cities of Compton and Long Beach, and
subsequently to be integrated with a more comprehensive expansion
of the distribution system; a lateral for service to the City of San
Marino; additional service connections for several other District
cities; and other facilities augmenting the aqueduct system. Con-
struction of a 100-mgd unit of the softening and filtration plant
near La Verne, in progress throughout the fiscal year, required
continuous attention to procurement of equipment, checking of
subcontractors' and manufacturers' erection layouts and shop draw-
ings, and other engineering details, Inve, tigations were made rela-
tive to prospective annexations to the District, as well as review
of maps, boundary line descriptions, and related documents sub-
mitted for purposes of current annexation proceedings.

Softening (/1/11 filt,."tinn plnllt expnnsion

Construction activity by the contractor for the expansion of the
plant reached a maximum during the fall of 1948 and continued
at a steady pace through the first half of 1949, Manufacturers'
shop drawings were checked covering mechanical equipment,
pumps, gates and valves, rate of flow controllers, meters, plant con-
trol equipment, and operating tables, as well as subcontractors'
erection layouts and shop detaib for reinforcement steel, structural
steel, piping, electrical facilities, miscellaneous metalwork, and the
various architectural features.
