Special and major maintenance, <br />repair. and construction work is done by a crew of men under the <br />mastel' mechanic with headquarters at the District shops at La <br />Veme. <br />From March 12 to 19, 1949 the upper feeder was shut down to <br />permit the contractor on the construction of the second unit of the <br />softening and filtration plant to make the necessary connections to <br />the initial unit. During the shutdown inspection and maintenance <br />work was performed at the plant and at Lake Mathews, Unwatered <br />portions of the steel pipe crossing the Santa Ana River valley and <br />the precast concrete pipe between Fontana and Rochester were <br />inspected and found to be in excellent condition, It was also neces- <br />sary to unwater the upper feeder between Siena Madre and Eagle <br />Rock from March 13 to 19, 1949 to permit the installation of a <br />new connection for the City of Pasadena near West Drive on the <br />west side of the Arro)'o Seco, At this time inspections were made <br />of the Hollywood and Pasadena tunnels, the unwatered portions of <br />Sierra Madre and San Rafael No, 1 tunnels and of the interior of <br />concrete pipe between Sierra Madre and East Pa:o:.adena and cross- <br />ing the Arroyo Seca. All sections of the line examined were found <br />to be in good condition, Several small leaks through grout holes in <br />HoHywood tunnel were stopped, using lead wool aJld cement. Dur- <br />ing the shutdown, Beverly Hills and Pasadena took care of their <br />water demands by increased pumping from local wells, Santa Mon- <br />ica was fumished water by the District through a connection with <br />the Los Angeles system in West Los Angeles, Long Beach and the <br />Los Angeles Harbor area were supplied from the Palos Verdes <br />reservoir, and the Orange County cities from the Orange County <br />reservoir. <br />Flow south in the Palos Verdes feeder was shut off during the <br />last foul' days of March 1949 to permit the installation of a turn- <br />out tee at Redondo Beach Boulevard for the West Basin feeder, <br />During this shutdown the City of Los Angeles installed a penna- <br />nent connection at 7th and Ol'me Streets. replacing the temporary <br />connection previously in ~ervice. Subsequently the city con~tructed <br />a concrete meter vault at this location, ' <br />O!l April 17 Hnd 1R; 1~)4D.. the Palos Verdes feeder was drajn~d <br />south of 228rd Street to a level that would permit three service <br />connections to be made for West Basin Municipal Water District <br />constituents, During the shutdown an inspection of the Palos <br />
