A T ION AND "IA 1 N TEN A NeE

,11

Operation of Morris reservoi?'

Morris reservoir was operated during the entire year in accord-
ance with the contract entered into October 1, 1945 between the
Metropolitan Water District, the San Gabriel Valley Protective
Association, and the Los Angeles County Flood Control District,
subject further to a contract between the Metropolitan District and
the United States granting the Navy Department the use of the
reservoir for the purpose of research in underwater ordnance.
The terms of the Navy contract provided for payment to the
District for use of the reservoir at the rate of $137,00 per day for
such time as the water level is maintained at elevation 1130 feet
above sea level and $342,00 per day for such time as the level is
maintained at elevation 1152 feet above sea level. Payments from
the Navy in this fiscal year amounted to 365 days at the $137 rate,
or a total of $50,005,00. In order to insure the required water
level for the Navy it is necessary to replace withdrawals and evapo-
ration and seepage losses which, if not replaced, would lower the
reservoir surface below elevation 1130. For this purpose the Dis-
trict releases Colorado River water from the upper feeder at the
San Gabriel River blowoff into the channel below Morris Dam in
exchange for San Gabriel River water retained in l\:!orris reservoir.
Releases of Colorado River water into the San Gabriel River were
250 acre-feet dnring October 1948, 25 acre-feet in March 1949,
709 acre-feet in April, and 72 acre-feet in May, a total for the fiscal
year of 1,056 acre-feet.

Operation of the dish-ibution systelll

An average crew of 35 men, exclusive of the San Diego aqueduct
and softening and filtration plant forces, working under the direc-
tion of the chief operation and maintenance engineer, has carried
on all operation, maintenance. and minor construction activities on
the distribution system, Division foremen with small crews were
located at Lake Mathews, Morris reservoir, Orange County reser-
voir, Palos Verdes reservoir, and at the north portal of Hollywood
tunnel. The foremen and their crews maintain the reservoirs, the
upper feeder, the branch feeders: La Verne to Orange County, Eagle
Rock to Palos Verdes reservoir, and Eagle Rock to Santa Monica,
and the laterals to constituent areas. Normal maintenance activi-
ties include systematic patrol of the pipe lines and structures,
operation of valves, meters, and equipment, minor repairs. paint-
I ing of metalwork, daily observation of water deliveries, changing

[\
I
'~
